In Indian history, 26 January is known as Republic Day. Republic day is a national gazetted holiday in India. Republic day is a national festival of India. In 2020, Republic day falls on a Sunday.

National Holiday :

         As you know that Republic Day is a gazetted holiday in India. All schools,colleges, government works and government offices are closed on Republic Day. Some businesses do not make a holiday and some may reduce their time period of  their duty.

What do People do


               A lots of people celebrate Republic day as a public ceremony. On  this day, people respect National flag  and National Song singing  the anthem "Jan Gan Man ..." (In mother language Hindi). People celebrate the Republic Day at  schools,colleges and public places, especially children participate in this program.
             In capital of India, New Delhi, A program is started with Prime Minister laying a wreath to respect the soldiers' sacrifice at the 'Amar Javaan Jyoti'   at India Gate. President of India takes the salute of soldiers. 
              A grand program is held at Red Fort, in New Delhi. A crowd stays to hear the speech delivered by PM at Red Fort. A grand parade is held. National Defences like Army, Navy, Air Force and dance troupes take part in national parades. 
   

History of Republic Day :

              Before 1947, India was under British government. After many revolutions and campaigns India got freedom on  August 15,1947. Now India was needed a best new constitution. To make a new constitution, a great personality of India named  'Dr. Bhim Rav Ambedkar'  visited to many countries of the world to take some good rules from their constitution so that he can add   them in own country constitution. 
            After this, the committee presented a draft of coming constitution to the National Assembly on 4 November,1947. Many assemblies were held to build the constitution. The National signed and accepted the final Hindi and English format of the constitution on 24 January, 1950.
           India's constitution was presented in the front of the citizens on 26 January, 1950.

Reason to choose the date 26 Jan as Republic Day :

            India tried to get freedom on 26 January, 1930  but can not get success. Many efforts was done for getting the freedom. That day was special in Indian history and was recalled as the anniversary of Purna Swaraj Day.  To remember that day, the National Assembly chose the 26 January.

First President :

     Dr. Rajendra Prasad took oath as India's first president at the Durbar Hall. He unfurled India's national flag at the Irwin Stadium. From that time, it is celebrated across whole India.
