Makar Sankranti is a famous Hindu festival. It is celebrated just after Lohri . In 2020, Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on 15th January. Normally it comes on 14th January every year according to Hindu calendar.
It is believed that Sun comes to stay with his son. It marks the end of the winter vacation and coming new long warm days.
Other names of Makar sankranti :
Makar Sankranti is called with distinct names in different states of India. It is called as 'Maghi' by Hindus and Sikhs. In Maharashtra ,West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh,Goa, it is famous as 'Poush Sankranti' .Tamil people know it as ' Thai Pongal' and in Assamese area it is known as 'Magh bihu'.
Celebrations :
On this festival Children fly kites in open blue sky. This make happy them because it is a game. In this game, children usually cuts the kites of each other because the make a race to fly the kite at higher sky. Such games is to be started before 10-15 days of the festival.
Sweets :
Obviously there is no any special sweets like another festivals. Home and hand made sweets are eaten by people. People like to eat to the sweets made from sugarcane on this occasion. Farmers harvest their crop. Because of the completeness of works of farms, It is also called as Harvest Festival.
Makar Sankranti according to Calendar :
Makar Sankranti is named because Sun moves into the Zodiac sign (Makar Rashi) capricorn. Due to change of the sun's path ,the capricorn has been changed. Due to this change, Hindi months also change into Magh from Posh. According to the name of the month 'Maghi' ,Makar sankranti is called as 'Maghi' or 'Bhogi' .

Makar Sankranti is a popular festival of India. All farmers celebrate this festival as a Harvest festival.
A main thing is to fly the kites in this festival. All kites come from markets. But in rural areas of India, kites are still made by children. Children enjoy this as a game. They feel happy.
